During the winter months it is our natural instinct to reach for warm, comforting foods and we naturally tend to eat more calories to keep warmer during the winter season. Does Netflix and munchies sound like a regular winter night in for you? You are not alone. Science suggests that the cooler temperatures and darker evenings means more time spend in doors (closer to that fridge!) and our bodies crave the extra calories to keep us warm and snug! (mmm Dominos!)
With spring upon us and summer fast approaching, its time to get back in shape! Here are a few simple tips to help you on your journey of feeling good and getting back into shape with Aqua Yoga :)
1. Be Gentle on Yourself
Following our bodies natural cycles and allowing ourselves to move with the seasons can be a wonderful way to be gentle on ourselves. Self love is key to feeling good. Just because you have a goal to become healthier and in better shape does not mean you have to be hard on yourself. Find a diet and exercise routine that works for you.
Aqua Yoga is a gentle form of exercise that practised regularly can help you on your journey to feel fit, healthy and in better shape. Aqua Yoga can be very therapeutic and is a holistic form of exercise to balance the body, mind and spirit.
2. Make Healthy Food choices
As we all know, making healthier food choices can not only make us look great on the outside but also feel more balanced mentally and emotionally on the inside.
Eating a plant based diet can compliment any exercise practise. You will feel lighter and more energised with the added benefits of lowering cholesterol and blood pressure. By choosing a plant based diet and consuming whole foods you are also going to loose weight. Eating a varied plant based diet rich in fibre, vitamins, minerals and plant based protein alongside your Aqua Yoga practise will have feeling revitalised and looking trim in no time.
3. Move More
Sounds obvious but ask yourself are you as active as you could be? There are many reasons why we may think we do not have time in our busy schedules to join a gym but the simple truth is we can move more by just being more aware of how much or how little we move. Could we walk to the shop instead of drive? Could we take the stairs rather than the elevator?
If you are intrigued by how Aqua Yoga can be incorporated in to your daily routine but do not have time to go to the local swimming pool every day (and are not so fortunate to have your own private pool at home - now that would be nice!) - could you practice some forward bends in the bath tub or set some mindful intentions in the shower? Or do you have a holiday coming up - could you practise in the pool with a video on youtube?
After just 30 minutes of Aqua Yoga you will reap the benefits of this gentle, calming practise. If you can practise Aqua Yoga for half hour, 3 times a week you will be on your way to getting back into shape with this low impact exercise, improving your strength, flexibility and range of motion.
4. Have a Realistic Plan
As Brian Tracy puts it 'A goal without a plan is only a dream'.
When writing down your goal, be realistic. Break it down in to steps and give yourself a time frame. If you want to practise Aqua Yoga to get in to shape, decided when, where and how often you will practice. And have fun in the process!
And don't forget tip number 1 - Be gentle on yourself :)
